Another Bloomin’ Designer

Published on: 17th January 2010

How can a business card stay on a client's desk, and not in their pocket?

Of all the older projects from the archive, my growing business card has definitely remained the most popular. For a quick project, designed to get my foot in the door, I’m amazed at how far the Another Bloomin’ Designer project has spread across the design press and the internet. A friend mentioned that even a Google Image search (at time of posting) for business card will bring the project up, crazy.

The card was designed to be as minimal as possible, so not to detract from the eventual surprise

My goal behind the card was simple: to design a business card that a prospective client or employer would want to keep on their table rather than in their pocket. However, being just another young designer amongst thousands of others, I was aware that a nicely printed card just may not cut the mustard. So, following a little research I managed to create a business card that worked like a miniature house-plant, growing alfalfa or cress when dipped in water. I even managed to shoe-horn in a decent pun: my business card was for, wait for it, ‘another bloomin’ designer’. Stop groaning.

By following the instructions correctly...

...a decent bloom would have been seen within a week

Although this growing business card has been out of production for a while now, it’s still not unusual to receive one or two requests a month for copies to be made or for press coverage. While press imagery is fine, I regret I cannot create any more, nor can I produce copies for other businesses.

  1. This card is brilliant Jamie :-) Did you construct the cards yourself or get someone to do them?

  2. Hi Eddie,

Taking the short ‘print run’ into consideration I decided to construct the cards myself. That was a long weekend…

    All the best,

    Jamie

  3. I’ve been looking for places that do specialised cards like this for a while but haven’t had much look, there could be a business opportunity for you there ;-)

  4. Hi Jamie,

Pretty job, but it seems that the seeds would fall from card… Wouldn’t it?
